I read that article to see if any more information was available. It seems unlikely that autopilot was engaged -- only adaptive cruise control, which disengages if the seatbelt is unbuckled. Therefore, there was a driver in the vehicle. Likely the driver unbuckled and moved around to try to exit the vehicle after the crash.
That makes more sense than "killer autopilot quickly gets up to killing speed in a residential neighborhood and crashes into a tree".
Likely the driver was trying to show off how quickly the car could accelerate up to a high speed, and lost control.
