I don't think that the 31% really do, rather, I think that they are just paying lip service to the whole idea. Back in the Day, when the Church would burn people alive for having "desecrated" the so-called "Body of Christ," that's when they really believed in it. The only reason that the Catholic Church has influence now is because it had influence then; the whole enterprise has run out of gas and is just coasting to complete irrelevance.
*shrug* They believe in talking snakes, talking donkeys, the voice of God coming out of a flaming shrub, touch-healing, walking on water, transmutation, a global flood, magic iron, demons possessing pigs, angels, necromancy, etc etc. Believing in transubstantiation doesn’t seem like much of a stretch.
