The biggest potential problem I see with EVs is the demand for lithium for the batteries. There is a lot of development in battery technology looking to overcome this issue but so far it hasn't yielded much. But if you compare a model A to a typical modern SUV, the differences are extreme. There's no reason to assume that EV design will not improve over time.
I'm pretty sure there was skepticism about automobile ownership among common people at one time. Yet no one says that now.
