Why does that upset you? It's a grammatically correct sentence and using the word "people" in this context doesn't even suggest an authoritarian PC police. It sounds more clinical than anything else. I really don't see anything that should bother anyone. I'm frankly more surprised you would listen to NPR. Doesn't seem like your cup of tea. I absolutely never listen to Fox News or my blood pressure would soar.
It's faux outrage. If he doesn't read something that gets his undies in a bunch several times a day, he feels he's not doing his civic duty as a patriot.
