My buddy' s dad (who was black) referred to his own kids as "colored children". "Negro" was just going out of favor.
In the 70' s - that was perfectly acceptable. "Black" was just getting it' s sea legs at that time.

I don't know. I'm not black. So, if black people are telling me to not use a term(and they are; arewethereyet isn't pulling that out of her ass, it's a real thing that we're switching to African American, black, and person of color now based on feedback from the African American community on how the term "colored people" is received) then I respect that and listen. It's not a big deal to me and it makes a difference to the tone of the conversation and how we elevate it from the tone of these histories. I don't see why changing the words you use is a problem if it's hurting people.
