The only horror I can recall liking was Stephen King's Tommyknockers. That one had excellent character development and had more of an element of science fiction with a horror twist than true horror. Maybe some of you might think it's a bogus choice.
I'm definitely not a fan of the pure horror genre. Real life can suck enough so I tend to prefer optimistic fiction such as Star Trek.
