It’s not so much the *yuck* factor as it is the laziness of the filmmakers. A film like ‘Psycho’ requires a helluva lot more cinematic artistry than ‘A Nightmare On Elm Street’.

In movie/tv history, there is a lot to be said for absence and implication.
In the original "Psycho", to this day I could swear, in the shower scene, I saw the knife physically go into her flesh. But that was merely my own mind retrofitting after the fact. But regardless, horror films well done or not, after time, lose their luster, be they a films or be films.
