But the Muslim god-concept is different from the Judeo-Christian one. So I'm not sure he can be attacked on that front.

As for the OP, sex and coupling is tied heavily to power (a married couple can be described, in some sense, as a power unit... especially in tribal society).
Religion can't keep its hands out of the cookie jar when it comes to anything power-related. So it has its hand in there. It's a half-accidental, half-on-purpose state of affairs. Add to that recipe Paul's urge to control the desires of those in his cult (in one way by denying them life's simple pleasures) and BOOM. You have a god that is deeply concerned with sex. The rest is merely historical development from there.
