But they DO have a concept of gender, if they had absolutely zero concept, instead of an alpha male and female pair, you'd get and alpha pair with 2 males or 2 females, because they have zero concept and can't tell the difference between the genders.

Probably not as fun as whatever goes on in here when Huggys not shitting on the counter tops...but...being "headed up" by one sex or the other isn't a gender concept. Lions are "headed up" by males - who will absolutely kill any offending female or male interloper.... or cub.  However, the lionesses hunt.  If a male lion tried to participate in a hunt (and they sometimes do)..figuring out whether they held a gender concept would come down to observing how the lionesses handled that - with respect to how they acted "normally", in a hunt without the lion.

-this, ofc, only applies to populations in which the males aren't consistent members of the hunting party. There are a couple of prides observed where this is the normal state of affairs (we assume..due to the size of the targeted game). A strong indicator for gender concepts would be when one sex or another doesn;t participate even though their inclusion would be immediately and apparently beneficial. For humans, for example...Males and Boys have been primary hunters. This despite the fact that female biology is better suited to those hunting conditions exploited (or created) by humans. The explanation for this, conveniently, is that those circumstances have not always been the case. As hunters we specialized in something else - a thing which doesn't even exist anymore. Megafauna. It used to be that adaptations to damage and burst strength mattered - but, today, the ability to distinguish between subtle color changes and manual dexterity determine who does or doesn't bring home dinner. Our traditional gender roles don't match up to our biological reality.

We can tell there's something else going on. The best fruit pickers aren't picking fruit, even though we're picking alot of fruit. This comparison holds even when we consider the vast egalitarian disparity in agricultural production.
