I hold the opinion too that humans aren't superior and have no morally defensible position of superiority over other animals.
I agree with the ethical reasoning against animal cruelty.
I disagree about the importance religion places on humans. I think this is a particular interpretational stance that I personally don't subscribe to and would say is unfairly cliche'd. I think it's an easy to make but a wrong and descriminatory slur.
In Hinduism too, the idea of reincarnation venerates all sentient beings as equal to humans and strive not to cause any sufferring to individuals of this supposedly inferior species.
I have the greatest respect for animals and it's enlightening to think 'ownership' could be seen as such descrimination in speciesism.
