Never did " the gun just went off".
There is ALWAYS some negligent prick involved 99.99999%.of the time with his booger hook on the trigger.
You obviously have no real experience with firearms. I have NEVER seen in over 50 years of gun handling and ownership - nor in my time selling guns or working on them for customers - a gun spontaneously fire. The ONLY one I have heard of - and known examples are very rare - less than 5 known - was a malfunction with the safety on Remington 700 rifles - AND THOSE still required a person to disengage the safety.
Literally 1 in billions odds.
"No real experience---" is an ad hominem fallacy.
As it turns out, I've had a bit of experience with firearms, in the army: Our Basic weapon was the7.62 rifle in which I was rated marksman. Plus F1 submachine gun (piece of shit), Plus M60 machine gun, M26, M36 grenades. Have fired all of those weapons. Plus in Malaysia the Armalite, Bren and Carl Gustav anti tank. (never fired the Carl Gustav)
I have never allowed firearms on my property. My issue with civilians with guns is a combination of their stupidity and the immediacy of a gun. You are 80% more likely to shoot yourself than anyone else. Or perhaps your toddler will get hold of your gun and shoot himself or a sibling.
I'm reasonably sure that the Kyle what's his name tragedy would simply not have happened if none of those involved had a firearm. Pretty sure Kyle would have stayed at home for fear of being beaten up..
Australia had a mass shooting in 1996 at Port Arthur Tasmania. The lone gunman killed 35 people and wounded 24. Within weeks my government had passed bipartisan laws restricting gun ownership in Australia. If you are an urbanite, as 85% of us are, it's now almost impossible to legally own and keep a fire arm in your house.
Since 1996, there have been no mass shootings in Australia. Even our armed robbers rarely carry guns.(too expensive on the black market) they tend to use bladed, or pointy tools.
There has never been a school shooting in Australia.
There is a clear correlation of guns an gun related deaths. That doesn't necessarily mean the connection is causal. However I'm far more convinced of that than any of the fatuous slogans put out by the NRA.
One more point; as an outsider, seems to me that the role of the NRA is to protect the gun industry. It is not about the second amendment rights of its members based on the self serving, wilful misinterpretation of the US Second Amendment.
