On a related note (to the OP)... what do people think of Eliot Spitzer? He's been featured on UK TV this past week (first I've ever heard of him, I haven't followed US current affairs much). The guy seems to be spot on, if a self proclaimed charismatic who walked into a wall.
In the same vein, I was interested to try to look up UK government spanding over the past half century. This chart shows public spending compared to GDP.
I was surprised at the results. Happy about pension and health spending levels and the reduction in defence spending.
