Actually, the issue is not clear cut at all. If the roles of the US and Japan were reversed, and the US found itself in the position Japan found herself in November 1941, I have no doubt the US would have decided to go to overt hostility at or around that time as well.
Due to its testosterone driven self-righteous view of Pearl Harbor and total unwillingness to contextualize the event, the US really learned no real fundamental lessons from it at all. Which is fundamentally why the US found itself currently at such logger heads with Russia regarding Ukraine and NATO Expansion into the former Soviet Union, and with China over Taiwan.
