The Quran states that the thinking process of hell's inmates will quite intact:

"Malik" is the keeper of hell; an angel. So inmates will be able to think, cry, feel and ever recognise names.
Like Nudger just said, that means hell can’t be a black hole. In order to experience pain (or anything else), time would have to pass.
