anomalocaris is the original apex predator in the history of life on earth.
The story of its discovery and classification is also IMHO one of the most instructive story of how the science of paleontology is done and how it informs evolutionary biology.
Cool facts about it:
1. it was the largest animal in its ecosystem. imagine a t-rex bigger than brachiosaurus or a shark larger than a blue whale.
2. It has the most eyes of any creature known to science - it’s two compound eyes consists of least 34,000 separate simple eyes.
3. It’s mouth is circular and looks like a inside out circular saw, with a ring of triangular teeth around the circumference pointed inwards.
