Sometimes atheists deny that universal moral standards exist. They say that such standards are cultural norms, and bound to vary from culture to culture.
I suspect there may in fact be something like an overall, objective view by which we can pass judgment. But that view is certainly NOT equivalent to "American standards" of judgment.
To show that we're judging things objectively, and not simply by the habits of our own social group, we'd have to define some way of determining what goes, objectively, beyond cultural specifics.
