Nearly 100 years ago, the three inventors of the process extract and purify insulin were awarded a patent, which they promptly sold to the University of Toronto for $1 each, their idea being that insulin was so vitally important that they viewed it as a gift to the world.
Insulin is already cheap to produce - it costs about six dollars to produce one dose of insulin. It was never intended to be a money machine.
