We don't all know that, btw, I think you probably reject that explicitly. That the ends actually do justify the means or that actual history is actually written by the actual victors.
It’s hard to envision Russia winning. They could come up with something different, of course (go nuclear/chemical/biological, etc), but winning the fighting is not the same as winning the war. In a geopolitical sense, Putin has already lost the war. The weaknesses in Russia’s military have been exposed, the economy is cratered and about to get worse, Europe is more unified and anti-Russian than it has been in decades, and so on.
If it’s true that war is the extension of politics by other means, then the metric that matters most in determining ‘winning’ is if you come out of a war stronger than you went into it. The longer Russia keeps this going, the weaker they’re going to be at the end of it.
