adding ceramic is just like adding steel but at 40 % the weight. ERA (explosive reactive armor) can be defeated by tandem warhead missiles and RPGs thar uses a pre-charge to prematurely trigger ERA, and a main charge to defeat the armor exposed by the premature ERA.
The most modern approach is active defense where the tank use a onboard millimeter wave radar ti detect incoming missile, RPG, or even a tank shell, and then automatically fire a device that passively or actively intercept the incoming projectile at some distance away from the tank enough for the warhead explosion to be harmless to the tank. the US, Israel and china appears to have such systems deployed on in the field, the Russians, Germans and southKoreans appear to have a similar system exhibited at trade shows, but not deployed on large scale.
