Calls started for RBG to step down and be replaced early in Obama's 2nd term. Of course Obama would have been able to pick someone to take her place. RBG could have stepped down at any point, but her narcissism clouded her judgement, and of course, we never know for sure when we're going to die, but it ended up being a huge error on her part. I'm not putting all the blame on her for this, but things happen for many reasons, and you can't learn any lessons if you ignore the things that went wrong. Don't let ego get in the way of your values and goals. RBG did that.
The president doesn't just get to pick someone and they automatically become part of SCOTUS.
Appointment Of U.S. Supreme Court Justices
The nomination process for a new Supreme Court justice begins when one either retires from the court or passes away. Thereafter, the sitting U.S. President nominates a qualified replacement. After this occurs, the Senate Judiciary Committee takes over the next part of the appointment process. This committee then vets the nominee's background, history and credentials and holds a first hearing with him or her to question them on their qualifications. The committee then votes on the nominee and the nomination is then sent to the full senate to go forward or with the recommendation that the nominee be rejected. If the nominee is rejected then the president will have to pick a new nominee and the process will start over.
I'm aware of that. You know what I meant. Someone would have been nominated and confirmed if RBG stepped down, and Obama wouldn't have picked someone too of a lefty anyways, because Obama was pretty conservative, so no, you wouldn't have gone multiple years with no supreme court justice being confirmed, and RBG stuck around because of ego. Learn the lesson and hopefully someone in her position makes a better call next time, for the good of the country and for the good of womens'/transmens' rights.
I'm on your side on this, but of course you and Nudge are going to get butthurt even if that is the case. I think this is terrible. Yes, the people against abortion rights should be blamed for this first and foremost, but it's also fair to point out RBG's fuckup, because if you don't even acknowledge what happened or learn from it, you're doomed to repeat those same mistakes.
