The reality is that the idea of god exists and has done for thousands and thousands of years, which is a strong enough reason to investigate why the phenomena exists, what function it performs and if it has had an impact on our evolution. Humans do have a hard-wired propensity for systems of belief which itself has distinct evolutionary advantages.
To ignore the facts and reduce the issue of 'god' to does it exist or not is to miss one of the greatest scientific oportunities available to humanity and also suggests that people who chose not to believe in a 'god' or other organised system of belief either have a redundant system in their brain or that they have replace one system of belief with another... which is potentially way more interesting.
