I’ve mentioned before that the only Republican President to be elected by a majority of the popular vote since I was born was Dubya in 2004. Bush’s first term and Trump’s only term only happened because of the Electoral College. Get rid of that, no more Republican presidents. And if the NPVIC ends up enacted by enough states (enough states have passed it for 190 of the 538 seats in the electoral college to be covered by it with 45 pending [Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania]; theoretically, if those three states plus Florida or Texas enact it, we’ve got 270 right there), we’re well on our way to decimating the Republican Party’s future chances at the White House for the foreseeable future.
I was reflecting on this yesterday and it gave me a little hope. I think the road will continue to be rocky for a while until the shift fully happens, then for a while longer as some of these batshit crazy rulings are slowly reversed. However, when I look around me at my daughter's generation - I do not see any fervor for conservatism outside of a few outliers. I see a lot of anger and energy on the progressive side. Granted, that's anecdotal. but I live in a very conservative area of Texas and see this swelling. Even without changes to the electoral process, I'm becoming a little more optimistic for the long-term.
Further to that, in what was a reliably red state, Beto came very close to defeating Ted Cruz last cycle. Granted, Ted Cruz is perhaps the most hateable human this side of Tucker Carlson, but to have a former punk rocker with an anti-gun platform almost take out a massively conservative sitting senator in this state was shocking. Tarrant County (Fort Worth) was actually blue in the last presidential election, and that's also unheard of. Nationally, consider that Biden was not a terribly popular candidate and won (popular and electoral) pretty convincingly (again, as with Cruz, in light of the hate vote against his opponent). People have inertia politically for sure, so things like the hearings and the current legal battles for Trump may not sway many, but it doesn't take many. Just a gentle nudge at those margins and this thing could turn quickly. I just hope I live long enough to enjoy it.
