The U.S. Catholic church bishops are conservative radicals.  However, Catholic people in general are used to ignoring the Church's bullshit.  It is the Evangelicals who are latching onto the abortion bans, not the average Catholic person.

Actually the congregation is getting more and more far right, mainly because the reasonable people are leaving, letting the fanatics become the new majority.

Happens a lot with dying cults.
