Right. For example, many Muslims think female circumsision is mandated in the Q'uran, but it's not. It was practiced by the local culture and sort of got assimilated into the local Islamic practice. FGM is now illegal in Somalia, a country that is over 90% Muslim; and part of the effort to arrive at that point was to show villages that Mohammed never said you had to circumsize your female children.
