I've made a new video against low-carb diets

OK, so I watched the first few minutes of your video. A few thoughts:

- Don't shoot with your back to a brightly lit window. The glare is washing out your video completely. And your video quality is terrible to begin with. If you're going to make Youtube video get a decent webcam and learn how to use it.

- Watching you fidget while slouching in your chair as you talk is not all that entertaining. Either do something interesting or run your audio over video of something interesting, preferably something to do with what you're trying to say.

- Your voice is nasal and uninflected, This almost certainly isn't your fault, but if you're going to be making Youtube videos it's something that you should strive to correct. There are a number of resources online, including Youtube videos (and yes, even a Ted talk) on effectively using your voice.

- Your accent makes you difficult to understand by times. This is unfortunate because it's actually one of your more redeeming features. If you can improve your clarity then you should be able to turn this into an asset.

- Don't waste the first minute of your video telling us why your life sucks. Especially if it has no bearing on the material you're discussing. You just lost the interest of your audience. Make that a separate video if absolutely necessary.

- Try to connect your thoughts. Introducing random criticisms with no obvious connection makes for a very disjointed narrative that's painful to try and follow.

- Do some solid research. Trying to take down somebody who gave a Ted talk based on dim recollections of your high school biology class is nothing more than airing your ill-founded opinions against somebody who can't respond. If you're taking on an expert then you should either be one yourself or have talked to at least three people who are. If you would have done the very basic research in this case you'd have recognized the glucose spike - insulin spike problem that the good Doc describes as an overcompensating feedback loop that's incredibly common in bad computer code. Think toppling robots, plunging jetliners, and exploding power plants. If you'd done this basic legwork you'd have avoided making an embarrassing video attacking a professional who actually isn't saying anything that hasn't been recognized by the medical community for several decades.

In short, pick your topic well, research it to death, script it, have a few friends and a couple people who know the topic read it over, rewrite as necessary, practice it until it's polished, then shoot it well.

Here's a video made by a pro. Take some notes.

Quote:It is presumably instinctual to think people used to eat a healthy diet in the distant past, before all the starch introduced into our diets by agriculture.

Why would any sane person believe that? The average hunter-gatherer lifespan was what, 25 years? But what does that have to do with the price of cheese on Ganymede?

Quote:But the evidence seems to be strongly against that idea, as there seems to be a strong link between low-carb diets and kidney stones.

OK, there's so much wrong here:

- A low carb diet is not a paleo diet. If you want to take on the imbeciles who think that the Neanderthals had it right because they had nothing better to eat than fibre then by all means, be my guest. But kindly do not construct strawmen. It is entirely possible to have a modern, healthy, low-carb diet without indulging in any of that witlessness.

- Your argument from kidney stones is a tu quoque fallacy. One diet being bad does not make the other good.

- Kidney stones of the type that you're referring to are caused by high protien diets, not low carb diets. The two are not the same. Protiens are metabolized to oxalates, amongst other byproducts, and calcium oxalate being notoriously insoluble forms nasty little concretions in your kidneys. So you're just as likely to get kidney stones on your high protien, high carb, high fat western McDiet as you are from a solely high protien diet, the difference being that the former gets you a side order of elevated heart attack and diabetes risks. The solution is to put down the bacon double cheeseburger, large fries, and jumbo pop, stop eating like your ancestors who worked on a farm 18 hours a day and needed the calories, and eat in moderation. Get on the not high anything diet and you'll avoid a lot of those pesky problems.
