Vaccines: Low trust in vaccination 'a global crisis'
Vaccines: Low trust in vaccination 'a global crisis'

Public mistrust of vaccines means the world is taking a step backwards in the fight against deadly yet preventable infectious diseases, warn experts.
The biggest global study into attitudes on immunisation suggests confidence is low in some regions.
The Wellcome Trust analysis includes responses from more than 140,000 people in over 140 countries.
The World Health Organization lists vaccine hesitancy as one of the top 10 threats to global health.

The global survey reveals the number of people who say they have little confidence or trust in vaccination.

When asked if vaccines were safe:

   79% "somewhat" or "strongly" agreed
   7% somewhat or strongly disagreed
   14% neither agreed nor disagreed

When asked if they believed vaccines worked:

84% agree either strongly or somewhat
5% either strongly or somewhat disagree
   12% neither agreed nor disagreed

It's a shame that many people do not trust vaccines.  I think it has to do with a lack of education on how they work, religious ideas and internet stories.  I am to the point that the US government should make some vaccines mandatory for everyone that can take them safely.  We have diseases such as measles that are coming back in the US because not enough of the population are vaccinated.  I think 95% need to be vaccinated against measles to protect the small percentage of people that cannot have the vaccine.

Are flu shots considered or perceived to be the same as vaccines? If so, it may be a confounding variable in these statistics.

I knew antivaxxers existed, but I didn't think it was to the point of being a global crisis.

Considering how widespread it is - "stupid" must have some evolutionary survival value.

Is it possible that vaccines get the attention they do because they are a political talking point, whereas antimicrobial resistance (which is possibly a far worse issue) doesn't because it isn't political yet?

Two completely different topics.

A flu shot IS a vaccine, no different in function or purpose than a vaccine for smallpox or measles.  The trouble with a flu vaccine is that there are numerous influenza viruses and they mutate with all the speed of a hungry cheetah. But even if a particular flu virus you get isn't the one you've been vaccinated against, your symptoms are likely to be shorter lived and less severe.

I think the results of the survey are likely pretty close to correct.  There is a huge amount of discredited disinformation about vaccines.
