I've yet to encounter anyone who told me to refer to them with a particular pronoun.

When I was a young bar-hopper and a big part of the gay club scene, I automatically referred to drag queens and transgender women I met as she. It never occurred to me to not refer to them as she.

I think I had to do it once or twice, back when I was still in my writing group. We started each meeting by giving brief introductions giving our names, what we write, and a few times, there was one Non-binary person who explained that they preferred to be called “they.” So, when my turn came around, I decided I’d use “motherfucker” as my pronoun. The NB in the group laughed a bit at that.
