Quote:I think you raise a good point here. This is a challenge to people who think that only science tells us what is true. There is nothing contrary to science about accepting gender identities. There is a huge one about people saying they feel there is an invisible man who lives in the sky. One is an existential claim the other is an individual one. So this comparison is absurd.
If someone with all the biological characteristics of a man says that she's a woman, I think we should believe her. However, I don't see how this is a scientific conclusion.
Science works as well as it does because it relies on empirical, quantifiable, repeatable experiments. What empirical, quantifiable, and repeatable experiment can prove or disprove a person's feelings that she is a woman?
We certainly don't accept feelings as scientific proof in any other area. If we did, we'd have to accept it when people say they have the feeling that God is with them, or that angels guide them, or any number of other beliefs that scientists tend not to accept.
In short: I believe trans people, but not for scientific reasons.

“No matter what men think, abortion is a fact of life. Women have always had them; they always have and they always will. Are they going to have good ones or bad ones? Will the good ones be reserved for the rich, while the poor women go to quacks?”
