The moon’s South Pole is one giant crater. If the ball goes through the hoop it doesn’t matter if it touched the rim.
When the Chinese landed in the same crater but even further north no one second guessed its claim of having gotten to an even more broadly defined South Pole before everyone else.
But I do think some private organization tacitly backed by government (read Japan and Israel) will now try to be the space age Amundsen or Scott and actually get within a few miles.
