Archdiocese of Cincinnati steps up efforts to defeat abortion rights amendment
The Archdiocese of Cincinnati is stepping up its efforts to defeat Issue 1, the constitutional amendment on the ballot this November that would codify abortion in Ohio.
“We cannot remain silent on a direct ballot question like the one in November, which is a clear threat to human life and dignity,” said Archbishop Schnurr in his pre-recorded homily. “Please pray earnestly for its defeat. Please educate yourself, your family and your friends about its dangers. Please vote 'No' on Issue 1 on November 7.”
But the homily is just the latest in an all-out effort by the church to defeat Issue 1. It has posted videos, sent a letter to all parishioners, and one more thing.
“We’ve made a $500,000 donation to the efforts of Protect Women Ohio specific to the November 7 election for Issue 1,” said Jennifer Schack, the spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. She says the church is unapologetic in its efforts.
The Ohio Legislature had passed a law in 2019 making abortion illegal in the state once a heartbeat can be detected in a fetus. A judge last October blocked the ban, restoring abortion rights temporarily. Issue 1 would make abortion legal in the state permanently.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
