If you are interested in Linux, what I recommend is to use applications that are cross platform:
Chromium or Firefox.
LibreOffice (for word processing, spreadsheet, etc.)
ThunderBird (for mail)
VLC (for playing videos)
Qt Creator (for C++ programming)
Shotcut (for video editing)
Steam (some sort of an app store to buy games).
Once you move to Linux, install the same apps and you already know how to use them.
For the distro, I recommend a popular distro and it is better to try a couple and see which one you like. This is a matter of personal taste.
I'll second all this, and add that Ubuntu and it's forks (Kubuntu. Lubuntu, Mint, etc...) seem to be the easiest for Windoze users who are new to Linux to get acquainted with.
