Right. At bottom it's an adventure tale, a quest. Like many stories, themes can bubble up from underneath, even without the author having planned them.
Oh, no doubt at all. The value of a story primarily lies in what readers take away from it. For some readers, ‘Moby Dick’ is about the price of hubris and man’s eternal struggle to bend nature to his will. For others, it boils down to ‘an angry sperm whale will fuck you up.’
