I'm curious why you'd ask atheists rather than asking Christians. We aren't exactly the believing in jebus type, so any answer that we're likely to give is going to be a whole lot of assumption and projection.
That said, I'd suspect that there are a variety of reasons. Cultural exposure appears to be one of the main driving forces. Lotsa Christians in the Deep South, not so many in Nepal.
