Is anyone here familiar with John Wyndham’s The Chrysalids? I discovered it recently, and when they got to The Definition of Man, I was immediately reminded of Trump’s Executive Order attempting to put his specific definition of “male” and “female” into law. The people of Waknuk (read: what we currently call Labrador) decided to make their own definitions of humanity into law, and God help the Blasphemies who turn out to have even the most minor of deviations from that definition.
And in the post-nuclear setting of the book, you could argue that something like this could be potentially justified to keep mutants from becoming the norm or summat, but now that it’s happening in the real world, it’s just happening to enforce gender roles.
