Here the average age of the congregation is in the late 70's and rising at ~6 months per annum, so the link from generation to generation has been broken.
CofE and Catholics are falling back on the cathedrals (to concentrate the remaining congregation) most smaller places are now without a church entirely.
Priests are covering 2 or 3 churches in seperate towns. The churches that had been 'mothballed for future generations' have now largely been sold off and converted to other purposes.
For most of northern Europe it's over.
