The claim taken from Genesis, was that the planet existed before the sun, and as if this weren't wrong enough, it is depicted to have had vegetation on it. John seems to think the necessary light came from elsewhere, though I have not seen anything approaching an explanation of where? Photons is all we have had, it lacks any depth of explanatory power, and of course the gravitas of the trump apologist card goddidit using magic powers.

He is talking/thinking of the very early stages of the universe, where no matter had formed, and no stars existed yet. He thinks this is the saving grace to the completely false creation narrative of his holy book.
