Sorry chip ...the early xtians WERE illiterate and burned libraries and books that were not "sanctified by their narrow little god.
Xtians did hold back science ...please don't get me started on the witch hunts and Inquisition.
Maths and science WERE forwarded in places like Muslim Spain...not xtian Europe, as far as I understand without going to depth about it.
The Plagues mostly affected xtian Europe as I understand it... their standards of hygiene were very low.
Xtianity has always seen science as a threat to it's continuance..as if science can not only FIND this godhead but also supply it's phone/ mail/email addresses and so rendering the 'church' redundant.
The one thing that was feared by the information held in the libraries of antiquity....which is why they were burned by xtian zealots.
