Shaman who ‘cleansed cursed jewellery’ among Europe’s most wanted
Mariana Mijailovic, 44, is on the run after police found blocks of gold, jewellery and bundles of cash stashed away in a secret room beneath a swimming pool at her home in Maria Enzersdorf near Vienna.
She convinced her wealthy victims that the jewellery they were wearing was “cursed” and needed an exorcism to rid them of demonic spirits, according to prosecutors.
She terrified the women with visions of their loved ones falling seriously ill or dying in sudden accidents before promising that it could all be averted if their jewellery was cleansed in shamanic rituals.
One woman gave Mijailovic £502,000 after being told she was possessed by demons. Another victim gave away £49,000 in the hope that her cancer would disappear. She later passed away, prosecutors said.
Once her victims had parted with their cash or valuables, the con-artist would abruptly break off contact and move on to their next target. She ended up defrauding at least 19 victims out of an estimated £8.3m in a 10-year spree across Germany and Austria.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
