After all, Newton himself found himself unable to take gravity literally because the notion of an immaterial force does not make sense. So he vacillated whethrer it was atmospheric pressure or the hand of God. It's not atmospheric pressure. Hm...I guess that doesn't leave many options then. Same issue with elecriticity, magnetism, electro-magnetism, nuclear "forces".
As Christopher Hitchins was fond of saying, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" So don't try to get me to believe in immaterial forces. All I see is matter. Immaterialism is an extraordinary claim. Newton didn't buy this nonsense, and you shouldn't either. Pretty much leaves us with the hand of God, which is NOT an extraordinary claim if God is material being who uses His material hands to impose the "force" (so to speak) of gravity, electricity, and so on.
