It's essentially no different to a computer you have at home, only it doesn't have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. It is connected to a super-fast Internet connection along with hundreds if not thousands of other servers, and is rarely turned off.
I think the current server has been running non-stop for ~300 days.
