If I recall correctly, Shirley Jackson got tons of hate mail, some of which was most vile, for that story. A lot of people were totally offended (which was the objective of the story, to make you feel uncomfortable at this mindless inhumanity) and predictably missed the point.
Read that short story in middle school and I still remember being taken aback at how... familiar and American it seemed, like I could imagine it happening here.
