Because the warm fuzzy blanket of superstition is more comforting to folks raised with the religious impulse than the alternative. Especially all that icky death stuff. Recorded human history has existed for about 10,000 years. My guess is that the future age when god no longer "has to exist" will look back at this belief with as much disdain as we do now at the superstitions that persisted during the dark age.
