What did the most in deconverting me was speaking with atheists that showed that you can be atheist and be a good person. Christians raise their kids to be scared shitless if they stop believing, therefore it's natural to be fearful of questioning yourself and how you've been raised to believe. Once I realized that it made no difference in how good of a person I was, I was deconverted. I stopped believing about 8 years before I stopped going to church and admitted to myself how I felt about it.
So with my experience, the best we can do is just be good honest people and show that a belief in a god doesn't make you a bad person. I think there's a shit ton more atheists than anyone realizes, most of them just haven't admitted it yet.
