RE: your opinion on joe paterno

The notion that a great sportsman must also be an outstanding appeaser of the contemporary public sensibility is, in my opinion, a lot of self-import and self-serving baloney served up by the sporting establishment for its own aggrandizement.
A field ought to recognize those who advanced its own art even if the contributor is not the greatest of all round human beings.
I think Watson deserves his Nobel prize for his discovery of the role and structure of DNA not a bit less even if he did steal fruits of someone else's work without giving any credit, and a racist bastard to the end. Paterno is no where near as faulty a person as far as I can tell. So build him his statue as long as people indulge in the frivolous reverence of sports heroes.
