I would expect that the 80% figure is combat troops, not soldiers in general (a large percentage of whom are not in combat positions). The amount of small arms ordnance expended per casualty is staggering. Not that I'm complaining about efficiency, mind you.
I too hope for a day where we are free of war, though I do not expect to see it happen in my lifetime.
