Phew - you had me worried there for a moment, idunno! Hoever, you articulated a point of view which I have seen presented in all seriousness many times before, so you can understand my concern I hope. You are correct, this is a somewhat common, though not overtly prevalent, misunderstanding of the Moral argument among Christians . It's also thought that every atheist should be a nihilist. I however think that this life could be enjoyed even if it were the case that God doesn't exist.

And yes, I believe Hitchens was alluding to a book...or a broadcast.. or something. He was definitely referencing someone else.
