Better reasons to quit Christianity
RE: Better reasons to quit Christianity
Do you fellows not recognize Hitchens' saying there? :p

He makes the point that if God was shown not to exist, he doubts Christians would do such a thing. I agree with him. However, if this was meant to be an argument against the Moral Argument it misses the point of that argument. That argument doesn't say that a person can't be moral without God, rather a person lacks an ontological basis for objective morality.

Napoleon, I do intend to comment on your infinity thread as I said last night before knocking out.

Good, I was hoping for more responses, but I can understand why people probably didn't bother reading it Tongue

I don't believe you. I refuse to believe that you need the thought of an invisible Big Brother to act as a brake on your actions. However, if this truly is the case, please seek help because you would be a danger to society. And please believe me, I mean that with the utmost respect to you as a fellow human being.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Stimbo, you're already on my list of respectable atheists here so no worries as to my understanding of your genuine concern. Wink

I was actually quoting Christopher Hitchens there which I explained to the other guys.

Is this list going to be published? Or is it for your eyes only? Angel

Phew - you had me worried there for a moment, idunno! Hoever, you articulated a point of view which I have seen presented in all seriousness many times before, so you can understand my concern I hope. Not to mention that it took me so long to write my response, and you lot are so quick off the mark, that half a dozen posts appeared the one I was replying to and mine. Note to self: must get a faster keyboard.

Anyway, wasn't it Mrs Patrick Campbell who spoke about doing it in the street and frightening the horses? Maybe the Hitch was alluding to her original quote in hos own.

You atheists tend to be an arrogant lot as it is. Should the list be published I can't imagine how big your heads would get

He's got a point there, Nap.

You are correct, this is a somewhat common, though not overtly prevalent, misunderstanding of the Moral argument among Christians . It's also thought that every atheist should be a nihilist. I however think that this life could be enjoyed even if it were the case that God doesn't exist.

And yes, I believe Hitchens was alluding to a book...or a broadcast.. or something. He was definitely referencing someone else.

Note to self, redux: must also get a keyboard with the letters where my fingers think they are. I of course meant to say "in his own"; the word "hos" makes no sense in that sentence construction, being most likely a mis-spelling of "hoss", BCD for "horse".
