I find it irritating when someone (almost always a Christian) insists that an absence of belief is a belief. Such a person must either be stupid or dishonest. How can an absence of belief be a belief?
But I suspect the reason why a religious person goes into that sort of nonsense is he just wants to give his nonsensical belief some respectability. But in the end, it's dishonest. But it's nothing new. Religious people are always dishonest when it comes to debating about faith.
