You seem like a reasonable sort of person. If you truly want, I think you can make a home here. But remember, everything costs something, even the good things.
Some prices are harder to pay than others. The forums you mention tend to be oriented towards subjects that are inherently polarizing and divisive. Religion, on the whole is that way, so I doubt that can be altogether avoided here, given the inclusion criterion. But I have always found atheists to be very open minded, accepting, and less judgmental — but then, they and I have many prejudices in common. I applaud your willingness to put boots on the ground and find out what other groups are like up close and personal. I do similar, belonging to groups that believe in the paranormal, channeled entities, and so on, and while I feel the methodology of hoping to gain understanding this way is significantly flawed, it seems a harmless way to explore the subject, and is probably in some ways very healthy.
I have never met any persecution on account of my differences, but then, I'm totally seckzors and got awwssum good peeplez skillz.
