I've seen video demonstrations by steel-workers who showed that while jet fuel is not capable of melting steel it nonetheless burns more than enough to greatly weaken it. A couple friends of mine who work in a steel mill confirm it, they also state that certain fuels are used to heat steel to a point of malleability without melting it, especially if they need to keep its shape, or they need to keep the integrity of the ingots, especially if they're worried about the alloy. High-grade steel is forged very precisely and milling it requires a fuckton of heat. Jet fuel burns hotter than the stuff they normally use to re-shape ingots; blow a hole in a giant structure and subject it to raging jet fuel for an hour or so? Depends on where you hit it. And they flew the planes low enough. If they'd flown in another 20 stories up the towers could've survived, albeit with heavy damage but they hit it where the structural integrity of the steel supports failed after being subjected to such intense heat for so long; all that weight up above came down on the rest.
